Start your day with a warm-up
Free write! What about any school appropriate topic you wish. Some ideas? What are you doing this holiday weekend? Where is your favorite place to shop? What is the weirdest thing you ever purchased? Tell me about your current class schedule. Maybe talk about your job if you have one. Schools you are applying to? How to build a gaming pc. Whatever… the world is yours!
We are going to create a level based on the Fresno Unified Vocabulary Word DESPERATELY. Our goal is to create a short level that reinforces the word so that we are gamifying studying.
Desperately is an adverb that means doing something with extreme urgency, in deep despair, or to an extreme degree
First we are going to make Toad Speak
Select Blocks and Tiles then set down some blocks for Mario to stand on
Select level setting and add Mario to the game
Select NPCs and make sure you have selected SMB3.
In the people section, click Toad on the bottom left
In the message section, type in “We DESPERATELY need your help!
Save your game

Save and Test

Next, increase the level bountry by clicking Level Settings > Level Boundry > Right
You should have a gold pointer if you are increasing the volume
Use the right key and double your play area
Add more blocks to stand on, add another toad and make him say “Desperately means needing or wanting to do something very much”

Go to NPCs and select a Coin
Spell out DESPERATELY Between the two Toads

Select Level Settings > SMB3 > Backgrounds >Hills

Extend your world out and add blocks so that Mario can walk for about 30 seconds before getting to the end and add a pipe

Go to your Second Toad
Select Backgrounds > Super Mario World > Platform
Add a pulley, some cable and another pulley

Return to NPCs
SMB3 > Platforms
Add the bottom left platform to your pulley system

Save and test to make sure your platform moves
Once you have it working correctly, delete the blocks under the pulley so that Mario can fall if me doesn’t make the jump to the other side
Test to make sure Mario can make the jump. DON”T MAKE THIS JUMP PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE! We are making the game for Elementary Students.

We are going to create another moving platform using layers
Select View and show Layers
Select View and Show events

Add a new layer and name it platform

You can see the platform layer that you just created in the Events Panel

With your Platform Layer selected (in the events window)
Select Select Blocks and Tiles > SMB3 > Tile Set > Wood
Create a small Platform

The platform that we just created is in the Platform Layer
In the event Window, we will create a new event by clicking Add
Name the event Up

Create a second Event called Down

Now we are going to make the Platform Layer move
In the events window, select your down event and find Layer Movement and select the Platform Layer
Do the Same for your Up Event

If we want something moving to the Right, it will be positive + on the X Axis so 1,2,3 etc
If we want something moving to the Left, it will be negative – on the X Axis so -1,-2,-3 etc
If we want something moving Up, it will be + on the Y Axis so 1,2,3 etc
If we want something moving tDown, it will be negative – on the Y Axis so -1,-2,-3 etc

With our Up event selected, we want the platform to go up so we are going to make the Horizontal Speed 1 (positive) because we want it moving up
Check Auto Start so that the layer is moving when the game starts
If we start the game now, the platform layer will be moving up until it is gone/ We want to use a Trigger Event to make the Platform Layer move down.
Find Trigger Event and Select Down
Add a 1 second delay so that the platform moves up for one second then triggers the down event

Now we have the Up event moving the platform up for a second then switching to the down event
Select the Down event and do the opposite.
Verticle Speed will be -1 because it is going down
Trigger event will be Up
Delay 1 second
Check Auto Start

Save and test

Now let’s add a wall after the second platform using bricks
Make the wall high enough so that Mario must just from the top of the platform to make it over but not so difficult that an inexperienced player can’t make it over after a few tries

Now add a checkpoint
NPCs > SMW > Check

Backgrounds > Super Mario World > Checkpoints
Build your checkpoint

Go to the end of your level and create a battle arena for the Boss Fight
make the walls high enough so that Mario will not be able to escape

Open your Layers and Events windows
View > Layers
View > Events

Create a new layer called Spring
With your Spring Layer Selected, Click NPCs > SMW
Add a spring to the top of your level

*** IMPORTANT***
You are going to hide the Spring when the game starts.
In your events window, select Level-Start
In Layers, Select Spring
In Hide Layers select Add

Now the Spring is hidden at the start of the game.

Now I am going to create a new Event, name it ShowSpring
This time I am going to select ShowSpring in Events
Select Spring In Layers
Select Add in Show Layers

So what is going on right now?
When the game starts, we have an Event called Level – Start where our Spring is hidden.
Then we have another event called ShowSpring where the Spring Layer is showing on screen but he have nothing calling or triggering the event.
Click NPCs > Boss
Select Sumo Bro on the top left but don’t place him yet
Select Events > Show

With yout Boss Still Selected
Go to your NPC Events Triggers
Event Triggers > Death > ShowSpring

Place your boss
Save and Test
Now your Spring should appear when you beat the boss.
Grab it and move it so you can jump over the wall to the pipe

Level Settings > Super Mario Bros 3 > Section 2
In Section 2, Create a room with a pipe going Down at the top and three pipes of different colors at the bottom
Create a platform for Mario to land on

Select NPCs > SMW > Signs
With the Sign Selected, add the following Text in the message
Green Pipe – I DESPERATLY want to beat this level. Copper Pipe – I DESPRATELY want to beat this level. Gray Pipe – I DESPERATELY want to beat this level. Choose the correct spelling to move on.

Return to Section 1 (Level Settings)
Go to Warps and Doors
Add a Warp going down the pipe at the end of Section 1

back to Level Setting > Section 2
Back to Warps and Doors
This time we want the Exit Direction going down

Now we are going to add the warps
First Pipe

Go to section 3 and a pipe going down

Warps and Doors
Add an Exit

Repeat the process for the copper pipe

Save a test
Back to Section 2
Add a warp for the Gray Pipe
Level Settings
Section 4
Create a Room with a floor and a pipe to drop in
Add the Exit Warp
Add and Exit Star
Save and test
